Diesel Generator Routine Maintenance: 6 Key Points

Whether a generator set stays reliable over the long term depends largely on routine maintenance. These are the six points our service engineers see most often on site.

  1. Engine oil and filters:Change the engine oil, oil filter and fuel filter according to running hours; shorten the interval in dusty environments.
  2. Cooling system:Check coolant level and concentration, and clear dust from the radiator fins to avoid high-temperature shutdowns.
  3. Battery:Keep the float voltage correct and the terminals clean; charge standby sets regularly.
  4. Air filter:Blockages cause black smoke and power loss — replace according to the indicator or the service interval.
  5. Test running:Run standby sets on load once a month to confirm starting, voltage, frequency, coolant temperature and oil pressure.
  6. Service records:Record running hours and maintenance work in full so the next service can be planned and traced.
